Jordan Mechner: Prince of Persia 25th anniversary
Mon Oct 06, 2014 7:14 am
Ubisoft may have forgotten the Prince (again) but Jordan did remember and left this emotive post we share here.
25 years ago today, the first (Apple II) version of Prince of Persia was released.
(At least, that’s the day I wrote in my old journal. In 1989, game launch dates weren’t publicized the way they are now, so it’s hard to be sure.)
This birthday deserves, at the very least, a cake. Whitney and I are still deciding what kind of PoP cake to bake. In the meantime, I wanted to mark the occasion by sending out a big “thank you” to all Prince of Persia fans.
In October, 1989, I was one tired and exhilarated 25-year-old, wondering what to do next after a four-year programming and game design effort. I hoped players would discover and enjoy the game I’d worked so long on, but it seemed equally possible that it would quickly fade into oblivion.
The reception you’ve given the prince over the past quarter-century has been a greater reward than I ever imagined.
I’ve been especially touched by the personal stories you’ve shared. It means a lot to me to hear that playing Prince of Persia has become a warm childhood memory of time spent with a parent. Or that, in the early 1990s, PoP made it through the Iron Curtain and reached a generation of gamers and game designers in Poland, Russia, and the former Yugoslavia in an era when communication was difficult. (I won’t even ask how many of you pirated the game.)
I’m constantly humbled and inspired by these reminders of how far the echoes and ripples of our work can travel without our knowledge. Thank you.
Many of you have been asking when there will be a new Prince of Persia game. I don’t have a big birthday announcement to make today, but I’m hoping along with you that the prince will have more adventures to come. As soon as there’s news, I’ll share it. Watch Tumblr, Twitter, and the website for updates.
Many happy returns!

Let´s hope he is right and the Prince returns to us soon.
